The i Tetralogy
Mathias B. Freese
Hats Off Books
ISBN: 1587364042
Fiction, Historical Fiction
Reviewed by Jocelyn Pearce

The i Tetralogy, by Mathias B. Freese, is a book about the Holocaust, told by three very different characters. The first part of this novel, called "i," is about a nameless victim of the Holocaust. The second part of the story is called "I am Gunther," and is about Gunther, a German guard. The third section, "Gunther's Lament," follows him to America, and "Gunther's Redux" is about Gunther's son, Conrad, who is dealing with what his father did in the past and what really went on inside the camps, what his father was a part of.

Each of these parts is very well-written, but it isn't anything new. There are countless books about the Holocaust, but it's good to have them, as many as there are, because this is something everyone needs to read, to learn about the cruelty of Nazi Germany, and the unfeeling way they tried to exterminate Jews, as if they were rats.

This book is powerful and emotional, as well as being very scarily believable. Each of the the three main characters are just as believable, as are the worlds they live in, combining to make this a very frightening book. To think that such things really did happen is a shock, and this book is a great addition to the many books that tell that story. The first part, the one told from the point of view of the Jewish prisoner, is the point of view always seen. The other two, murderer and his son, are less often written, and, as such, add originality to this book. The i Tetralogy is an outstanding book that anyone should read.
