This is not only a very appealing book visually, but it has a smoothly written story. Books about animals continue to be highly popular with children and books featuring horses are loved by many of the girls who are avid readers.
Shadow : the curious Morgan horse meets an interesting need; that of bridge books (ones that help young readers make the transition between picture books and chapter books). There is plenty of text surrounding the terrific illustrations by Jeanne Mellin (I particularly like the dazzling rooster).
When a falling tree breaks the fence around her pasture during a thunderstorm, young Shadow’s woodland adventure begins. Her imagination has been fueled by the barnyard rooster’s tale of a magical pond in the nearby forest. He tells Shadow that drinking the water will allow her to fly. In the course of her adventure, she meets deer, a skunk with bad manners and a new friend who leads her back to the safety of the pasture.
This will be a great addition to any library collection as well as a gift for young readers at birthday or Christmas time.
