When Jon and Maddie find themselves stranded on a Maine holiday island, cut off by a storm that has taken out all the phone lines- nothing happens. Not for a while, anyway, and that despite it being obvious from the moment they met, on the ferry from the mainland, that they were destined to fall for one another.
No, it’s not the most intriguing set-up for a romance, but Sylvia Kaye isn’t in a hurry, and neither are her would-be lovers. Not until Jon hurts his ankle trying to escape from the cottage by bicycle, and Maddie finds herself forced to cater to his every whim, do those whims escape the bounds of innuendo and suggestion that had hitherto passed between them, and “Her Maine Man” finally reveals itself to be the erotic volcano it spent its first 40 pages promising to be.
The story itself, sad to say, remains less than captivating, even when it’s obviously warming up for a fresh bout of action. There’s something innately uninteresting about both Jon and Maddie as they go about their daily lives. Only when they are together, away from the increasingly convoluted circle of friends that fuss and flutter around them, do they shake off the dullness that naturally encloses them, and Kaye’s experience as a romance writer gets to shine through.
Until then, Her Maine Man is a little like taking your morning shower, and having the hot water cut out every couple of minutes. And 175 pages is a long time to stand patiently around, waiting for it to warm up again.
