Veteran author Diamond takes a leap out of her customary romance and suspense preserve, to deliver a paranormal romance that makes excellent use of both of those (so frequently devalued) terms.
The basic set up of old house, bad-tempered ghost and an unsuspecting resident plunged into the midst of an ancient drama is itself as old as the supernatural genre itself. But the twists come fast and furious, as artist Ian Fanning discovers when a single mom, Sharon, moves into the apartment next to his, and turns out to be the spitting image of his dead grandmother, slaughtered in that same house by her husband, Ian;s grandfather. Further family secrets, murderous and mad, tumble out as the tale continues, while3 Ian and Sharon develop a relationship that, well, that’s where things really get interesting, as you wonder just how deeply embedded in his heart Ian’s family history might be.
At 156 pages, Touch Me In The Dark may be a shade over-long, Diamond does have a habit of spelling out incidents that could just as effectively be brushed over. But her characters are believable, her dialogue is spot-on, and the story itself is definitely powerful. One to read on those hottest of summer nights, when you simply need to lose yourself in a world of unexpected chills.
