The main character in The God of the new Millennium is Lakshmi. The book is a cross between a memoir and an extended letter written for her good friend Giselle. The main focus is the discussion she has with Giselle and their mutual friends. Along the way, we are privy to Lakshmi’s reflections and are witness to events in her life.
When I first got the book, I was expecting something like Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet or Nasir Khusraw’s Knowledge and Liberation where each section starts with a single question and the remainder of that section explores that topic. Perhaps even something like Plato’s dialogues where each dialogue develops the philosophical underpinnings of that topic.
I found the dialogues lacked the philosophical depth I was craving. If some dialogues had a point, it was so subtle that I missed it. The “story” got in the way of philosophical discussions. From some of the dialogues, I believe that this book does not do justice to what I think Dark is capable of expounding. These short gems of dialogues, unfortunately, are few and far between. I wish this book would have focused either on philosophy or telling a good story. By trying to do both, I feel it does neither well.
