When we normally think about health, we focus on the condition of the physical body as if it were somehow removed from the mental, emotional, and spiritual portions of ourselves. Conventional medicine tends to treat individual symptoms rather than looking for underlying interconnections or root causes. As a society, we value stoic attitudes and the denial of any part of ourselves that might be judged by others. Then, we wonder why our physical health suffers.
Hierarchy of Health asks the reader to extend the definition of health to include all aspects of the mind-body-soul. The information provided is quite dense. The author covers a wide variety of topics ranging from healthy psychological development and social adaptation through emotional responses and ego defenses to conscious awareness and moving past delusional thinking. While much of this material is quite heavy, the author does a very good job of transitioning theory into an active self help plan. She does this primarily through use of easy to use exercises and journaling questions.
