Musical Chairs is a beautifully written memoir by Jen Knox. Jen Knox is a gifted writer and her story one that will touch your heart and stay with you long after you've read the last page. A truly moving coming-of-age story.
When her parents divorced (she was fifteen) Jen decided it was time to run away from home. Both sides of her family were laden with mental illness. Jen spent a great deal of time with her grandmother who suffered from schizophrenia and Jen feared she had absorbed some of her grandmother's insanity through osmosis.
For several years Jen ran to escape the restlessness she felt inside. From factory work, to becoming a stripper, to manicuring at a salon, to working in a bookstore, and finally ending up back in college Jen fought the demons she felt inside and finally running no longer worked and Jen began experiencing panic attacks. Even alcohol became ineffective at masking the anxiety Jen was experiencing and she began to examine her past and where it ultimately led her.
